Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India’s rooftop solar scheme that pays you up to ₹78,000 (₹85,800 in special category states) to put solar panels on your roof. A 3 kW system can produce around 300 units of electricity every month, which is enough to bring most household bills close to zero. The subsidy goes straight into your bank account, and a collateral-free bank loan at about 5.75% interest is available for the rest of the cost.
This guide covers everything in one place: the subsidy for each system size, the real 2026 price of a 3 kW system, how to apply online, how to log in and check your application and subsidy status, how to find a registered vendor, state top-up subsidies (including the new Delhi and West Bengal updates), and a quick calculator to estimate your savings.
| Latest Updates (September 2026) | |
|---|---|
| 5 Aug 2026 | The scheme crossed 50 lakh rooftop solar homes, with 14.8 GW of capacity installed across India. |

| Sept 2026 | Delhi approved an extra ₹78,000 state subsidy and free rooftop solar for homes using up to 400 units a month. |
| 13 Aug 2026 | WBSEDCL and REC held a vendor meet in Kolkata to speed up the scheme in West Bengal. |
| Current | Loan interest for systems up to 3 kW is linked to the repo rate, currently about 5.75% per year. |

What Is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
Under this scheme, the central government pays part of the cost of a rooftop solar system on your house. Once installed, the panels generate electricity from sunlight for about 25 years. Whatever you use at home comes off your bill. Extra electricity goes back to the grid through a net meter, and your DISCOM gives you credit or payment for it.
The scheme is not just a promise on paper. By August 2026, government data showed:
- 50.06 lakh homes had installed rooftop solar under the scheme
- ₹28,024 crore in subsidy had been paid directly to bank accounts
- 19 lakh households reported a zero electricity bill
- 12 lakh households earned a combined ₹421 crore in 2024–25 by selling surplus power, about ₹3,500 per home per year
Why Was the Scheme Started?
- To cut electricity bills for middle-class and low-income families
- To increase clean solar power and reduce dependence on coal
- To create local jobs in solar manufacturing and installation (over 34,000 vendors are now registered)
- To help India meet its clean energy targets
PM Surya Ghar Subsidy: How Much Will You Get?
The subsidy is called Central Financial Assistance (CFA). It depends on the size of your system, and it stops increasing after 3 kW.
| System size | General states | Special category states* |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | ₹33,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | ₹66,000 |
| 3 kW or more | ₹78,000 (maximum) | ₹85,800 (maximum) |
*Special category: North-Eastern states, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
How it is calculated: ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, plus ₹18,000 for the third kW. In special category states, it is ₹33,000 per kW for the first 2 kW plus ₹19,800 for the third kW. You can install a 5 kW or 10 kW system, but the subsidy will still be capped at ₹78,000 (or ₹85,800).
Housing societies and RWAs: Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations get ₹18,000 per kW for common facilities such as lifts and common-area lighting, for systems up to 500 kW.
Which System Size Do You Need?
Check the “units consumed” on your last few electricity bills and use this table (based on the national portal’s own guidance):
| Average monthly usage | Suitable system | Subsidy |
|---|---|---|
| 0–150 units | 1–2 kW | ₹30,000 – ₹60,000 |
| 150–300 units | 2–3 kW | ₹60,000 – ₹78,000 |
| Above 300 units | 3 kW and above | ₹78,000 |
Rule of thumb: 1 kW of solar produces roughly 4 units a day, or about 120 units a month, in most parts of India. You will need around 100 sq ft of shadow-free roof space per kW.
PM Surya Ghar 3 kW Price in 2026 (After Subsidy)
This is one of the most searched questions: “पीएम सूर्य घर मुफ्त बिजली योजना 3kW price”. Here are typical 2026 market prices for an on-grid system with made-in-India (DCR) panels, fully installed:
| System | Approx. market price | Central subsidy | You pay (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹55,000–₹70,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹25,000–₹40,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹1,05,000–₹1,20,000 | ₹60,000 | ₹45,000–₹60,000 |
| 3 kW | ₹1,45,000–₹1,65,000 | ₹78,000 | ₹67,000–₹87,000 |
Prices are indicative and vary by city, brand, roof height and mounting structure. Prices are usually higher in hilly and North-Eastern states. If your state offers a top-up subsidy (see below), your cost drops further.
How Much Will You Save? (3 kW Example)
| Item | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Monthly generation | 300 – 360 units |
| Monthly bill saved (at ₹7/unit, 300 units) | about ₹2,100 |
| Yearly saving | about ₹25,000 |
| Your cost after subsidy | ₹67,000 – ₹87,000 |
| Payback period | about 2.5 – 3.5 years |
| Panel life | about 25 years |
| Total savings over 25 years | ₹5 lakh+ (before any tariff hikes) |
Fixed and meter charges on your bill continue. Actual savings depend on sunlight, roof direction and your state’s tariff.

State Top-Up Subsidies (Extra Benefit Over ₹78,000)
Some states add their own subsidy on top of the central amount. This can make a 3 kW system much cheaper, or even free.
| State | State top-up | Total for 3 kW (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | ₹78,000 extra (approved Sept 2026). Homes using up to 400 units a month can get a 3 kW system installed free of cost. | ₹1,56,000 |
| Uttar Pradesh | ₹15,000 per kW, up to ₹30,000 | ₹1,08,000 |
| West Bengal | A top-up was reported in July 2026, but no official notification has been published yet | ₹78,000 (central) confirmed |
Bihar and Tamil Nadu have also announced state support. State rules change often, so confirm the current top-up with your DISCOM or state renewable energy agency before you sign with a vendor.
Eligibility: Who Can Apply?
- You must be an Indian citizen
- You must own a house with a roof suitable for solar panels
- You must have a valid electricity connection in your name
- You must not have received any other subsidy for solar panels on the same connection
There is no income limit. Any household that meets these four conditions can apply. Tenants cannot apply in their own name, because the connection and roof must belong to the applicant. Housing societies and RWAs can apply separately for common facilities.
Documents Required
- Latest electricity bill (for your consumer number)
- Aadhaar card
- Proof of house ownership
- Bank passbook or cancelled cheque (account must be in the applicant’s name)
- Mobile number for OTP
- Recent photograph
Tip: Make sure your name is spelled the same on the electricity bill, Aadhaar and bank account. A name mismatch is one of the most common reasons subsidies get delayed.
PM Surya Ghar Online Registration & Apply Online: Step-by-Step
The entire process is online, and registration is free. You do not need to visit any office.
Step 1: Register on the National Portal
Go to pmsuryaghar.gov.in and click “Apply for Rooftop Solar”. Enter your mobile number, fill in the captcha and verify with OTP. Select your state, district and electricity company (DISCOM), then enter your electricity consumer number.
Step 2: Log In and Fill the Application Form
Log in with your consumer number and mobile OTP. Fill in your roof details, sanctioned load and the system size you want, then submit.
Step 3: Feasibility Approval
Your DISCOM checks technical feasibility. For systems up to 10 kW, approval is now deemed, so there is no long wait for a site visit.
Step 4: Choose a Registered Vendor
Pick an installer only from the list of registered vendors shown on the portal for your DISCOM. Compare two or three quotes, sign the agreement and upload it on the portal.
Step 5: Installation
The vendor installs the panels, inverter and structure. Use only DCR panels (made with Indian-made solar cells) from the ALMM list, or your subsidy can be rejected.
Step 6: Net Meter and Inspection
Submit the installation details on the portal and apply for a net meter. The DISCOM installs the net meter and inspects the system.
Step 7: Commissioning Certificate
After a successful inspection, the DISCOM issues the commissioning certificate on the portal.
Step 8: Claim the Subsidy
Submit your bank details and cancelled cheque on the portal. The subsidy is credited to your bank account through DBT, usually within 15–30 days of commissioning.
PM Surya Ghar Login, Status Check & Subsidy Status
How to Log In
- Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in and click Login (Consumer Login).

How to Check Subsidy Status Online
Your subsidy request appears as the final stage in Track Application after commissioning. When it shows as released, check your bank account for the DBT credit. If it is stuck for more than 30 days after commissioning, confirm that your bank account is active and that the name matches, then contact the helpline 15555 or your DISCOM.
PM Surya Ghar Vendor List: How to Choose the Right Installer
Over 34,000 vendors are registered under the scheme. The portal shows the registered vendors for your DISCOM when you reach the vendor selection step. Before you sign:
- Confirm the vendor appears on the portal list for your DISCOM
- Ask for DCR panels and an ALMM-listed model, and get the brand names in writing
- Get the price, warranty (panels are usually 25 years, inverter 5–10 years) and service period written in the agreement
- Do not pay the full amount before installation. Link payments to milestones
- Compare at least two or three quotes
PM Surya Ghar Loan: Collateral-Free at About 5.75%
If you cannot pay your share upfront, public sector banks offer loans under the scheme:
- Interest rate: repo rate + 0.5%, currently about 5.75% per year (for systems up to 3 kW)
- Collateral: not required for systems up to 3 kW
- Loan amount: around ₹2 lakh for up to 3 kW (higher for 3–10 kW at normal rates)
- Tenure: up to 10 years
- Where to apply: the Jan Samarth portal or banks such as SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB and Bank of India
Because the subsidy comes back to your account after commissioning, many banks let you use it to prepay part of the loan.
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in West Bengal
West Bengal residents apply on the same national portal, pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Select West Bengal as the state and choose your electricity company:
| DISCOM | Area |
|---|---|
| WBSEDCL | Most of West Bengal |
| CESC Ltd | Kolkata and nearby areas |
| India Power (IPCL) | Asansol area |
| Durgapur Projects Ltd (DPL) | Durgapur |
The central subsidy of up to ₹78,000 applies fully in West Bengal. In August 2026, WBSEDCL and REC held a vendor meet in Kolkata to add more installers and speed up approvals. A state top-up was reported in July 2026, but it has not yet been officially notified, so do not count on it until it shows in your portal application.
Timeline: How Long Does the Whole Process Take?
