What Is PMMVY?
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is a maternity benefit scheme that puts cash directly into the bank accounts of pregnant and breastfeeding women. The idea is simple but powerful: pregnancy and the first months after childbirth are when a woman needs rest and proper nutrition the most — yet this is often exactly when many low-income women, especially wage labourers, feel pressure to keep working. PMMVY offsets some of that lost income and encourages women to attend prescribed health check-ups, register their pregnancy early, and get their child vaccinated on schedule.
The scheme is run through Anganwadi Centres and health facilities at the grassroots level, supported by Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) and ASHA workers, who help eligible women register and track their benefit status. Since March 2023, the entire process has been digitised through the PMMVYsoft MIS (Management Information System), which tracks registrations and payments online.
Objectives of the Scheme
- Provide partial wage compensation so pregnant/lactating women can rest properly before and after delivery
- Encourage early registration of pregnancy and regular antenatal check-ups
- Promote institutional delivery and safe childbirth practices
- Encourage timely immunisation of the newborn
- Improve overall maternal and child health and nutrition outcomes
- Extend an additional incentive for a second child if she is a girl, supporting the broader goal of gender equality alongside schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

Application & Payment Flow

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Registering too late: The first instalment depends on early registration — delaying reduces the chance of receiving the full benefit on time.
- Missing the vaccination cycle deadline: The second instalment is linked to completing the first vaccination cycle; delays here delay your payment.
- Providing a bank account not in the woman’s own name: PMMVY funds must go directly to the beneficiary’s own account.
- Skipping facial recognition/e-KYC: New enrolments without this verification (mandatory since May 2025) may face processing delays.
- Assuming eligibility for a third child: The scheme strictly covers only the first child, and a second child solely if she is a girl.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Direct cash support during a financially vulnerable period | Benefit amount (₹5,000) is modest compared to actual pregnancy-related costs |
| Encourages early registration and regular health check-ups | Multi-step process tied to specific health milestones can delay payment |
| Extra incentive for a girl child supports gender equality goals | Not available to women in regular government/PSU employment |
| Simple, Anganwadi-based application — no need for agents | Requires an Aadhaar-linked bank account and working mobile number |
| Digitised tracking (PMMVYsoft, mobile app) improves transparency | Facial recognition step can be a hurdle in areas with poor connectivity |
